NHS Framework for Continuing Care and NHS-Funded Nursing Care
The Department of Health has published the National Framework for NHS Continuing Healthcare and NHS-funded Nursing Care, following public consultation.
The guidance in the Framework is part of the Department of Health's continuing care policy in England. This policy covers:
- The criteria used to assess if you're eligible for continuing care
- The procedure for investigating cases where people may have been wrongly denied continuing care.
The Framework also abolishes different nursing bands for free nursing care.
Anyone needing high levels of healthcare outside hospitals will be assessed first for NHS continuing care, and if this is ruled out, they will then be considered for free NHS nursing care.
The National Framework was drawn up in consultation with voluntary groups and patient/user groups to ensure that the patient is at the centre of the assessment and review process, and to ensure that the views of patients and their carers are listened to
The Department of Health has produced a checklist to help practitioners identify people who need a full consideration of whether they have a primary health need and qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. To download the checklist click here.
A public information leaflet is available to answer your questions about NHS continuing healthcare and NHS-funded nursing care following the changes that were introduced on 1 October 2007 when the National Framework was implemented.
