Supporting and involving carers
The National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA) is a special health authority within the NHS, established by government in 2001 to improve the availability, capacity and effectiveness of treatment for drug misuse in England.
The NTA has produced 'Supporting and Involving Carers: A Guide for Commissioners and Providers' which is aimed at carers and carer groups, service providers, Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities and Local Authorities.
The guidance looks at best practice for local commissioning partnerships to provide services to support carers of individuals with a drug problem. The document also covers how best to include carers (where appropriate) in the drug treatment of the individuals they care for.
The guidance as a whole is based on the assumption that commissioners and service providers involve and consult carers in every stage of service design and delivery.
