Residential Rehabilitation
Residential rehabilitation is an option for people who have tried other community-based forms of help to become and remain drug and alcohol free, without success. Programmes involve spending a period of several months in a specialist unit, often away from an individual's home, to help break the links with drug using friends and associates.
Different units follow a variety of philosophies but all provide structured programmes of psychological, educational and social therapies aimed at preparing drug and alcohol users to achieve and maintain a drug and alcohol free life back in society. A list of residential rehabilitation units and their philosophies is available through most drug and alcohol agencies.
Places on residential rehabilitation programmes are usually funded by the Social Services Department of the district where the user lives. Access to this funding will require full assessment of an individual's needs and financial circumstances, which can usually be carried out by a social worker in a local drug and alcohol agency. Funding for residential placements may not always be available for users who have not previously tried other locally available treatments.
